Letter to the Editor: Nature abhors a vacuum

To the Editor:

Giving my Salisbury paper an extra shake and a reread of Marieke Andronache’s Jan. 10 article, I slowed down the second time.

Included with the picture of retiring DA Jim Martin was a message to Lehigh County residents from the new DA, Mr. Holihan. He will be casting a stern eye toward violent crimes, especially ones involving guns (they do tend to be the loudest).

But what of other crimes? The ones that lead to the violent ones? Mr. Holihan seemed to give those a shrug and a brush off. He doesn’t like the amount of money spent on minor crimes. Is taking drug dealers and gangs off the street boring? Do drunken drivers really have little impact on our community? Should there be no consequences for theft and anti-social behavior?

A quick click on Pennsylvania’s Crime Reporting System (on the dashboard type in Lehigh County, read it and weep) means that upon DA Holihan’s pronouncements, hundreds of Lehigh County miscreants sent up a hearty cheer of thanks to this former defense lawyer. He appeared disinterested in their areas of expertise.

Let’s hope he won’t be looking the other way when these criminals come for you and your loved ones.
