CHS boys pick up some wins

Catasauqua head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder got a glimpse of his team’s potential when it hits full stride.

After a six-game losing streak, the Rough Riders snapped back with wins over Southern Lehigh (63-59) and Palisades (59-44) to improve their overall record to 3-7.

“The kids played hard and kept it up,” said Snyder. “We have been battling a lot of sickness, too, lately. But they showed a lot of confidence and poise.

“The Southern Lehigh game was a tight one. We were up six at halftime and held a four- to six-point lead down the stretch. They cut it to one, but we were able to close it out.”

Frankie Pujols, the Roughies’ leading scorer, led the Roughies with 19 points and Hamaad Jenkins had 14. Dylan Lorah added 13.

Catty had an easier time against Palisades in a game in which they held a double-digit lead the majority of the time.

Pujols led the Roughies with 16 points against Palisades, and Reece Lopez chipped in with 14. Jenkins had 11, and Jeremiah Cofie added 10.

“We were up by 10 or 12 near the end of the first quarter,” added Snyder. “We pretty much took control of the game. They were able to get it down to 14, but our kids played a solid game. We were pretty aggressive, and we did a nice job.”

Snyder noted that Pujols still has some lingering effects from an ankle injury, and Jenkins has improved his play.

“Frankie’s ankle gets a little sore,” he said. “He’s not 100 percent. He’ll keep playing, and it will hurt him at times.

“Hamaad has been hitting some big jumpers for us, and he has worked on his shooting. He also was five-for-six from the foul line down the stretch against Southern Lehigh, which was huge for us.”

The Roughies have a busy week ahead with Moravian Academy Tuesday, Saucon Valley Thursday, and Notre Dame Saturday.

Snyder also credited the play of Aiden Saadioui, Manny Balmer, and Caden Weaver, who have all have been part of the regular rotation. Matt Fotta, who plays in the post, missed the last two games because of an illness.

The veteran coach is confident his team can turn the corner.

“We have been getting contributions from a number of people,” he said. “We know what we can do, and we just have to keep working.”
