Emmaus couple suffers fatal injuries in a crash on Mill Creek Road, Lower Macungie Township, Oct. 30

Two people suffered fatal injuries and a third person was hurt in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Mill Creek Road and the entrance to the Aldi store parking lot, 950 Mill Creek Road, Lower Macungie Township, Oct. 30, according to Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.

Kathy A. Schuessler, 67, was transported from the crash scene after being extricated from the vehicle, according to news releases from state police and the coroner’s office.

She was pronounced dead in the emergency department of Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, according to the news release from the coroner’s office dated Oct. 31.

Bruce C. Schuessler, 73, died Nov. 5 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he was taken after the crash, according to authorities.

The couple resided in Lower Macungie Township.

Authorities determined the cause of death for Kathy A. Schuessler to be multiple blunt force injuries due to a motor vehicle collision. Bruce C. Schuessler died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to a news release from the coroner’s office dated Nov. 6.

The manner of death for both was determined to be an accident.

The crash was detailed by authorities as follows.

A full-size pickup truck was traveling southbound on Mill Creek Road nearing the parking lot of Aldi at approximately 12:57 p.m. about the same time a compact sport utility vehicle started to travel westbound from the parking lot of Panera Bread restaurant toward Mill Creek Road. The compact SUV, driven by Bruce Schuessler, was described by authorities as crossing over the northbound lane of Mill Creek Road and into the southbound lane directly in front of the pickup truck. The pickup truck motorist tried to stop but collided with the front passenger door of the SUV, according to state police. The collision pushed the SUV into a curb at the edge of the Aldi parking lot, causing the compact SUV to flip before landing upright in a drainage ditch facing eastbound, according to authorities.

The driver of the pickup truck cut a hand in the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Investigating agencies include Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center.
