Charities receive winter wear

Latter-day Saint Charities from Salt Lake City, Utah, recently delivered clothing to local Lehigh Valley, Reading and Pottstown area charities.

Latter-day Saint Charities is the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its purpose is to relieve suffering, foster self-reliance and provide opportunities for service.

A tractor-trailer from Latter-day Saints Charities, carrying 17,000 pounds of wrapped and strapped bundles of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, along with bundles of coats and boxes of blankets, arrived at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Reading Crest Avenue in Reading. Local charity partners, such as the Lehigh Conference of Churches in Allentown, New Bethany Ministries in Bethlehem, Hope Rescue in Reading, New Journey in Reading, Mission First in Pottstown and Valor Clinic, which provides services to homeless veterans, along with other local partnering nonprofit organizations, were the recipients of this humanitarian relief.

“We are very honored to partner with these great Reading, Lehigh Valley and Pottstown organizations who provide so much to those in need in their communities,” said Peggy Shafer, local communication director for the church. “Our local church members also held a coat and blanket drive as part of this distribution to help keep those in need warm this winter.
