Former commissioner supports Smith for Lehigh County controller

To the Editor:

On Nov. 7, voters in Lehigh County will select those who will represent their interests in local government.

Although lesser known to many, the controller’s office is critical to the day-to-day operation of Lehigh County.

As stated on the county’s website, the controller is at the front lines of identifying county government waste and inefficiency.

That is important. Equally important is the independence that must be maintained, as it is the controller who is responsible for auditing each branch and department of county government.

This independence must include refraining from political affiliation, and the dedication to serve a complete four-year term without jumping ship to seek higher office.

Unfortunately, history has shown the same cannot be said of his opponent.

Robert Smith is a man of character and has the experience to be a great controller.

I have known him for years, and his experience with budgeting as a former chairman of both the Allentown School Board and Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, as well as Allentown City Council, will serve the county well.

My years of experience as your Lehigh County commissioner tells me you will do well to elect Robert Smith to be your next county controller.
