PHS pair wins D-11 doubles championship

The Parkland girls tennis team began District 11 postseason play last week with singles and doubles championship tournaments. The Trojans began district team play this week.

The Trojans’ Alexandria Warsing and Sophia Petrocelli took first place in last week’s doubles championship.

The Trojan duo was the top seed in the event and won its first two matches 6-0, 6-0 last Thursday at Lehigh University. They returned Friday and won the semifinal match 6-1, 6-1 to reach the title match.

Easton’s Ellyana Jacobs and Suhani Makwana put up a battle in the final, but Warsing and Petrocelli prevailed 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.

Parkland had three doubles teams qualify for districts as the pairing of Aarohi Vaze and Kiera Miles, and Ali Silman and Kiana Miles both dropped their first round matches.

Warsing played in last week’s District 11 singles final, her second straight appearance in the title match. She took the first set before falling to two-time champ Helena Lynn of Liberty, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Petrocelli and Sophie Elijovich also represented Parkland in the singles tournament. Both dropped first-round matches.

Parkland beat Freedom 5-0 in the first round of the District 11 team tournament Monday.

The Trojans finished the season 17-0 to earn the top seed in the tournament.

Warsing, Elijovich and Petrocelli won singles matches against Freedom, while the doubles teams of Vaze and Kiera Miles, and Silman and Kiana Miles won doubles matches.
