District to buy Cetronia property

Parkland School Board director have approved the purchase of two parcels of property near Cetronia Elementary School at a cost of $735,000.

The site, owned by Moyer Construction LLC, had been under consideration for placement of a Sober House for people recovering from addictions.

Earlier this year, many residents attended South Whitehall Township meetings to protest having the facility so close to the elementary school.

District administration and legal representatives also expressed disdain for a Sober House to be right alongside the elementary school.

At the Sept. 26 meeting, resident Michael Bodnar stated appreciation for the district’s concern in the matter which led to the decision to purchase the land.

Another resident, Chris Pirotta, said he is thankful the property will be under district control.

“It was a problem for a very long time,” Pirotta said.

Jay Rohatgi spoke from a remote setting.

“We’ve finally secured the Cetronia property,” Rohatgi said.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson noted the district currently has no plans for the Cetronia site.

Payment will be derived from the Capital Projects Fund.

With the start of the 2023-24 term, Grant Pinsley took his place as the new student representative on the board.

A senior at Parkland High School, Pinsley is captain of the debate and mock trial teams, president of the political science club, and a member of the chorale, honors orchestra, and other musical groups.

Pinsley serves as a liaison between students and the board, and reports on activities throughout the district at monthly meetings.
