Eagles-Hornets play to scoreless draw

The Emmaus High School girls soccer team had a successful opening week to the 2023 regular season. In a busy week for the Green Hornets, they won four games in a span of seven days, three of which were in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

Week two last week was a lighter one, but Emmaus still had to play two games in back-to-back days, both of which were in conference. Last Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Green Hornets hosted Pleasant Valley and came away with a 5-0 shutout victory. The next night, Emmaus welcomed Nazareth and after 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the teams still could not find a goal as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Against the Bears, Kam McWhinney led the offense with two goals, while Mya Cooper, Sammy Walkiewicz and Julia Adams added one each for the Green Hornets. McWhinney also contributed two assists along with Ryleigh McNellis, who also had two assists. Ashley Stine finished with five saves in goal. Emmaus outshot Nazareth 15-5 overall and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Nobody found the back of the net against the Blue Eagles after 100 minutes of play. It was the first game that the Green Hornets did not win through six games.

Currently, Emmaus sits on top of the conference standings, tied with rival Parkland at 5-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference.

This week, the Green Hornets have games at home against Pocono Mountain East Monday, at Bethlehem Catholic on Wednesday and then host Central Catholic on Friday.
