Moravian football captains have plenty of local flavor

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University football team has named senior running back Nate Boyle (Tamaqua HS), junior quarterback Jared Jenkins (Freedom HS), junior defensive back Chad Newhard (Emmaus HS) and sophomore linebacker Clay Basile (Bethlehem Catholic HS) as captains for the 2023 season.

The quartet are set to lead the Greyhounds during their inaugural Landmark Conference campaign this fall under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Jeff Long.

Boyle became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career rushing yards last fall, and he enters his senior season 16th all-time at Moravian with 1,420 yards on 345 attempts to go with 10 touchdowns. In 2022, Boyle rushed for 813 yards and seven touchdowns on 216 carries to be named to the All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention squad, and he also had 15 receptions for 175 yards and another touchdown.

“Nate works his tail off in silence,” commented Long. “He is the true definition of a lead by example young man. We are excited to see Nate continue to compete and lead our offense each day.”

Jenkins started three games in his Moravian debut last season before an injury ended his campaign. In those three games, Jenkins was 41-of-73 for 592 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, and he also ran for 36 yards and a touchdown.

“Jared is a steady presence for our team,” Long stated. “He is constantly working to improve his game and growing as a leader every day. His love for the team and this game is unmatched.”

Newhard also had his 2022 season come to an early end with an injury after six games. He made 41 tackles with two for loss and a pass break-up last fall, and Newhard has 103 tackles with two and a half sacks, six and a half tackles for loss, three passes defended and a pair of interceptions in his first two seasons with the Hounds.

“Chad showed his true leadership ability this spring,” noted Long. “Despite recovering from a previous injury, he earned the respect of his teammates with his focus in meetings, his constant attacking of his rehab, and willingness to do the little things to help the team.”

Basile recorded 59 tackles with three for loss and a pass break-up in his debut season in 2022.

“Clayton brings an energy to practice, training and the defense that is unmatched,” Long said. “His on-field growth this spring has coupled with his impressive work ethic.”

Moravian is slated to open the 2023 season on Friday, Sept. 1, with a nonconference game at rival Muhlenberg College with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Frank Marino Field at Scotty Wood Stadium in Allentown. The Greyhounds will play their first home game at Rocco Calvo Field on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. against the Apprentice School (Va.).
