LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Summer hoops set to begin again in Catty

When it began in 1985, Eric Snyder recalled being an assistant in the overall operation of the Catasauqua Summer Basketball League. He took over the operation of the league in 1988.

Now 35 years later, Snyder is ready to begin another season with 10 teams, a shell of what once was the heyday of the league in the 1990s with the now defunct Tournament of Champions as its centerpiece. League play got underway Monday night.

“We were happy to have 10 teams,” noted the longtime Catasauqua boys’ basketball coach. “Our original plan was to rotate the Tournament of Champions beginning with Bethlehem. But it never got around to that. It did have a great 30-year run.

“I don’t know how many league are left. North Catty has one, and I believe Bangor may still have one. There were some leagues that would pop up for a year or two recently, and then they would end.

“It’s not the same, but there are plenty of memories to go around.”

The Catty and North Catty League again will have the “Battle of the Boroughs” that was established in 2021. The tournament again will be held in late July. Snyder stated that the boys’ team will play in the Whitehall Summer League Small School Division, which will be composed of six total teams.

The Catty League featured Preventive Measures against The Tribe, Hokey Firehall vs. Bet On Us, and Ohlson Landscaping meeting Rebels Farm. The tip for the first game will be at 6 p.m., followed by a scheduled 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games

Tuesdays schedule had Hokey Firehall vs. Zone 6, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by Catty Corner against Preventive Measures at 6:45, and The Tribe vs. Bet On Us at 7:30 p.m.
