Coplay considers new location for police services

During the Coplay Borough Council meeting April 11, Mayor Steve Burker read a letter from police Chief Ryan Emerich asking council to consider planning for a new location for the police station.

This would allow the officers access to more modern facilities, which will enable them to serve the community more efficiently, Emerich’s letter stated, adding an improved facility will also attract more individuals seeking employment.

After discussion, council determined a phased planning approach would need to be taken regarding this matter.

Council voted on and approved the hiring of a second cadet for the police academy. This request arose out of concern that any unforeseen circumstances could arise and deter the one candidate being sent to the academy from completing the training.

In other business, the borough will hold a Celebration of Youth May 6. The event will begin with a parade 11 a.m. before the tot lot dedication on South Fifth Street, next to Coplay Public Library. Council voted on and approved the parade route for the dedication.

Several other new business items were brought to a vote at the April meeting. The Coplay Garden Club received approval to use the pavilion June 9 for a rock painting event. The Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission received approval from council to use the bathrooms at Saylor Park for its Mother’s Day run, which will be May 14.

With the resignation of Fire Chief Joe Britt, a motion was made to approve Mark Schuster as the interim fire chief. Council unanimously approved this motion.

Approval was also given to accept a bid in the amount of $100,146.60 for the truck route road-widening project at Second and Keefer streets.

To reduce operational costs, council approved the closing of the borough pool 7 p.m. every Monday in June, July and August. Additionally, a motion to approve the pool opening date as June 17 carried.

The next borough council workshop meeting will be held 7 p.m. May 2 at the borough office, 98 S. Fourth St.
