EHS starts season 3-0

The Emmaus High School baseball team opened its 2023 regular season with a 12-2 nonconference win over Blue Mountain at home on March 18.

Following that victory, the Hornets continued their win streak and trend of mercy rule games as they opened play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference by defeating both Allen and Dieruff in back-to-back days last Tuesday and Wednesday to begin the season 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Emmaus beat the Canaries 11-1 and then took down the Huskies 15-1, both in five innings.

The Hornets fell behind early as Allen scored a run in the top of the first inning. But the Emmaus bats answered in a big way, scoring six runs, three in each of the two innings, then had a four-run fourth inning to take control of the game.

William Fleck, Zach McEllroy and Noah Hogan each finished with two hits at the plate with Fleck and Hogan adding two RBIs and McEllroy scoring two runs.

Cole Moreau, who pitched three innings and struck out six Canary hitters in earning the win, led the team with three RBIs. Chad Kauffman and Dayne Schmidt each had an RBI.

Against Dieruff, the Hornets scored twice in the top of the first and then added four more in the third to take a 6-0 advantage. Emmaus broke the game open in the fourth, bringing home nine runners.

Fleck led the offense with three hits, while Schmidt drove in a game-high three RBI on a pair of hits. Ryan Latchford and Taylor Davis combined to limit Dieruff to one run on two hits in five innings of work. McEllroy and Hogan both had two RBIs.

Emmaus was at Whitehall to begin the week and then hosts East Stroudsburg North Wednesday. The Hornets are then at Hazleton in nonconference action on Friday before hosting Central Catholic on Saturday.
