Witt’s ornaments light the sky

Witt’s Tree Service, 738 Front St., Catasauqua, has been illuminating the night sky for more than 25 years.

Leonard Witt, owner of the business, first hung a Christmas tree from a truck boom at this location. He decided he wanted to expand the project to 4-foot-by-6-foot ornaments for every holiday, so he enlisted the help of his daughter, who was studying design in college.

Witt handcrafted each piece from rods of steel known as rebar. He then added lighted rope to give the larger-than-life sculptures some dimension. The finishing touch is 140 feet of lighted rope.

The ornaments take up residency on the boom of a crane reaching 104 feet into the sky. They dangle in the darkness of the night just yards from the Pine Street Bridge in the borough.

Witt said the ornaments are often used as a landmark for travelers unfamiliar to the area and have also become a huge hit with those heading home after a long, weary day.

His collection includes a cross, angel, witch, heart and shamrock, the latter currently lighting up the sky in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
