Hawks sending 10

It might have gotten a bit sketchy for Bethlehem Catholic during Saturday’s morning round at the Northeast Regional 3A tournament, but the Golden Hawks made sure not to repeat the same path from a year ago when Nazareth took the regional team crown.

After winning five of their 10 semifinal bouts, the gap between the Hawks and Blue Eagles had shrunk in the team standings, but when things wrapped up at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium, the Hawks came away with a 231.5-to-221.5 advantage to take home the team crown.

Becahi also had four champions and advanced 10 wrestlers to this week’s PIAA tournament in tournament in Hershey. After breezing through the District 11 tournament, having some bumps in the road may not have been the worst thing for the team heading to the Giant Center for Thursday’s opening round of states.

“The end result was nice to come away with the regional title,” said head coach Jeff Karam. “We were in good shape and faced some adversity. We regrouped and came back Saturday night for the medal round and performed really well.

“This year’s team is really tight knit and a lot of our guys were on that team from last year and they saw what happened with how Nazareth won all three [individual team titles] last year. I know that’s definitely going to be on there mind this week.”

Becahi’s four champions from last week included Keanu Dillard (107), Nate Desmond (114), Kollin Rath (139) and Andrew Harmon (160).

All four handled their finals victories as Dillard earned an 8-0 major decision over Abington Heights Luke Sirianni and Desmond followed suit with an 8-1 decision over Northampton’s Carson Wagner. Rath tech falled Nazareth’s Jack Campbell 24-9 in 3:28 and Harmon scored a 9-0 major decision over Jimmy Spindler of Pittston.

All four champs will carry weight going to their respective brackets, but Desmond is a returning state champion and is favored to repeat, while Dillard is the top-ranked 107-pounder in the country and is certainly seen as a favorite to come away with a gold medal as well.

“Keanu and Nate are favorites but there’s nothing given out there,” said Karam. “Their end goal is to win it and I’m sure they will perform their best. It’s always tough being a returning state champ, but Nate is a different breed and he won’t get rattled and wants the best competition. He’s totally focused and there’s not much I need to say to him.

“Same with Keanu. He’s very talented and undefeated but I think a lot of kids that wrestle him try to slow it down. Sirianni really came out and opened up and that was good for him.”

Harmon and Rath are wildcards for the Hawks in Hershey this week. Harmon didn’t medal in Hershey a year ago, while Rath took third. Both are expected to bring back hardware, as well as the rest of the Hawks contingent.

“Andrew Harmon has been on fire and he’s got a good shot if he’s on,” Karam said. “Definitely feel Kollin has a great shot, but he’s in the toughest weight class in the tournament with two returning state champs in his weight. We’re sending 10 guys out there and I think everyone of them can come home with a medal.”

Other state qualifiers from regionals for the Hawks were: Jake Dailey (152, second); Charlie Scanlan (145, third); Luke Thomas (172, third); Shane McFillin (127, third); Cael McIntyre (133, third); Augustus Warke (215, fourth).

Ryder Campbell (121) also placed fifth for Becahi, but only the top four advance to Hershey.
