LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

BETHELEHM CATHOLIC NEWS - Stepping into spring By Madeleine Nichelson

While Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted six more weeks of winter, The Bethlehem Catholic community is leaping into the new season with an explosive warmth of unity. However, this nod to the coming season isn’t simply in spirit but in name as well.

Last Sunday, March 4, Student Council created and brainstormed a new festivity for students to enjoy: The Spring Fling Dance. With pastel and flower adorned posters pasted around the halls, the Golden Hawk community started the turn of the tide in a fresh and fun manner. While this opportunity was open to students and one lucky guest each, Becahi has much more to offer for any who are interested.

The Northampton County Band Concert is set for March 18, boasting a display of excellence from many of Bethlehem Catholic’s own. This continued theme of breaking precedent to go above and beyond has been a feature in reports of the community year-round, and this momentum has only grown with each semester.

Continuing the winning spirit and tradition attached to the program, the Boys wrestling team secured the PIAA 3A team state championship Feb. 11 and are looking to continue the legacy at individual regionals, where Andrew Harmon (160, senior), Cael MacIntyre (133, senior), Nathan Desmond (114, sophomore), Kollin Rath (139, sophomore), Charlie Scanlan (145, sophomore) and Keanu Dillard (107, freshman) will be looking to defend first place finishes at Districts, accompanied by the seven other wrestlers who advanced.

To continue in athletic excellence, the girls cheerleading team traveled to Florida to compete at the National Championships. The girls put on a flawless performance and received no deductions, representing the Hawks proudly.

While each performer and wrestler has worked tirelessly to accomplish the mentioned accomplishments, it is central to the Becahi community to recognize the role faith plays in all successes. The school coterie came together to celebrate this faith and reflect on the absence of it during a celebration of Ash Wednesday, during which students boast a cross of ashes on their forehead to openly display their faith and open their hearts to forgiveness.

These masses aren’t the only chance to come together as a Catholic community, from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, each grade came together to garner school spirit in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Activities included a pep rally led by senior Aidan Rompilla and a school-wide jeopardy game in which grades competed head to head in categories ranging from Slang and Geography to Candy and Golden Hawk Facts. Additionally students enjoyed dress down days, and a basketball tournament.

“Seizing opportunities to come together and have fun is central to being part of the Becahi family,” says senior student body president Alice Frank. When asked what she was most excited for in the coming weeks, she responded, “The annual EPC Model UN competition is coming up in mid-March. I’m ecstatic to compete for my final time as a senior. Last year we finished tied for third with Easton and I’m confident we will continue to improve upon those results this year.”

The verdict is in, winter weather may still be swarming the Lehigh Valley, but that certainly isn’t stopping the Bethlehem Catholic community from stepping into spring with their best foot forward.
