Upper Milford Historical Society opens its doors for monthly open house events

Happy New Year!

Four days into 2023 and my hope is it is going well for you so far.

The new year brings a new monthly event to history enthusiasts in Upper Milford Township.

Beginning Jan. 15 and continuing the third Sunday of each month, the Upper Milford Historical Society will open its doors for an open house.

Visitors are welcome 1-4 p.m.

Township residents interested in researching information about prior ownership of their residences or other properties in the township, learning more about the township or seeing artifacts donated and curated over the years are encouraged to stop by for a visit.

Members of the historical society, which is an all-volunteer organization, will staff the open house events.

Previously, the archives have been open only before monthly meetings of the historical society, which are held the last Thursday of each month from January through October.

Meetings usually include a brief business meeting followed by a program.

The historical society archives include documents dating as far back as the 1700s, a large collection of locally discovered arrowheads and jasper, examples of home and farm implements used in the township, photographs, school yearbooks and many other artifacts documenting life in the area.

The historical society is located in the Upper Milford Township municipal building, 5671 Chestnut St., Old Zionsville.

Visit the historical society’s website www.uppermilford.org, the organization’s Facebook page or email uppermilfordhist@gmail.org for additional information.

In other Upper Milford Township news, the turnpike bridge over the Northeast Extension is open for the winter.

The detour limiting travel on Vera Cruz Road to local traffic is no longer in place; however, in an email to The Press Jessi O’Donald, secretary/treasurer of the township, cautioned motorists there may be some delays in the spring as crews wrap up work on the project.

Bridge work in Lower Milford Township was scheduled to end in November 2022.

Motorists also may notice the new traffic signal on Allen Street in Upper Milford Township.

The boards of supervisors in Upper and Lower Milford townships were scheduled to hold reorganization meetings Jan. 3. Meetings schedules are available on the websites of each township.

As a reminder, Upper Milford Township supervisors meet the first and third Thursdays of the month. Meetings begin 7 p.m. in the township municipal building, 5671 Chestnut St.

Lower Milford Township supervisors meet 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of the month in the township building, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road.

Both townships welcome volunteers to serve in the respective communities. Visit www.uppermilford.net or lowermilford.org for details.
