The holiday season is upon us. At this time of year, folks will be traveling all over the country.

Travel is back up to its highest numbers since 2019.

Colin Riccoban, director of public and government relations at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, reports 73,128 passengers passed through its gates in November. This is the highest number of passengers at this time of year since 2007, he noted.

Riccoban said he is excited about the energy and enthusiasm surrounding people’s willingness to fly.

He reported COVID-19 has not been a factor with air travel this season. He said this has been the case at airports all over the country, not only LVIA.

People feel safe traveling, as evidenced by the increased numbers, Riccoban said.

The holidays can be stressful when it comes to traveling. Here are several tips to make traveling easier during the holidays.

Most importantly, pack your patience. Lines are going to be longer, so give yourself extra time, whether it’s at LVIA or anywhere. Two hours is the minimum amount of time to allow before departure.

Riccoban reported parking, getting through the ticket booth and passing through security checks can take a significant amount of time. Plan accordingly for smoother travels. Everyone in your travel party will be calmer understanding and expecting things will take longer than expected.

It’s also important to research your airline’s travel requirements - specifically, its carry-on bag policy. Riccoban advised when you are bringing gifts, use a gift bag or bring wrapping supplies with you.

Have a plan B in case of travel delays or cancellations. Unexpected events can derail the best of plans. Don’t be caught by surprise.

Charge electronics, such as laptops and cellphones, before departure. In the modern world, the need for instant communication is essential.

Pack a snack and an empty refillable water bottle. Flight times vary so your body may need fuel.

The Transportation Security Administration has travel advice as well, such as know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage. Find out what is permissible and what is prohibited. It’s best to consult the TSA website - tsa.gov.

TSA also recommended leaving room in your suitcase to bring home gifts and souvenirs and mail gifts that you are giving instead of packing them. TSA will likely require wrapped gifts to be unwrapped for screening.

Riccoban also reminded travelers to take advantage of LVIA’s amenities. For example, there are pay-to-use massage chairs and free Wi-Fi, as well as eateries and shops.
