Batten runs to 40th place at state meet

Salisbury freshman Emily Batten finished 40th at Saturday’s PIAA Class A Cross Country Championships.

She was among 11 ninth graders to place in the top 40 at the event, which included 257 runners.

Batten, who qualified for states with a seventh-place finish at the District 11 Championships, ran the state championship race in 22 minutes and one second on a warm and humid day on the difficult Parkview Course in Hershey.

Notre Dame (Green Pond) won the Class A girls team title. After tying with Montrose at 78 team points, the Crusaders took the title based on the finish of their sixth runner. They had seven finishers while Montrose had just five.

In the Class A boys race, four-time Colonial League champ Thomas Smigo won a state title in 16:33.40, beating second-place Tyler Rader of Huntingdon Area (16:39.3) and the rest of the field, which included 266 finishers. Central Cambria won the boys Class A team title.
