94th annual Sheeprock Trek and sunrise service Nov. 24

The Friends of the Library will hold its fall book sale 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19 in the Lower Macungie Library. Friends’ Preview Night is 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 17. Join the Friends that night and purchase books before the weekend crowds. There will be a bag sale 2:30-4:30 p.m. Nov. 19. All proceeds from the sale benefit the library.

The 12th annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Lower Macungie Community Center, 3450 Brookside Road. Over 100 crafters and vendors will be participating. Food is available 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a free shuttle from the parking lot to the door.

Concordia Lutheran Church will have a Thanksgiving Eve Service 7 p.m. Nov. 23. Local food bank offerings will be collected during the service. There will be a pie fest immediately following the service.

The 94th Annual Sheeprock Trek and Thanksgiving Sunrise Service will leave promptly 5:45 a.m. Nov. 24 (yes, Thanksgiving morning) from the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department, 31 S. Walnut Street. Macungie Boy Scout Troop 71 will light the way up Macungie Mountain where there will be a brief Thanksgiving sunrise service with a special Thanksgiving message by Eagle Scout T.J. Seislove. Hot chocolate and doughnuts will be served at the end of the hike. The event is coordinated by the Macungie Historical Society. Hikers should be prepared with flashlights, gloves and hiking boots. In the event of inclement weather, the sunrise service will be held at the Macungie Volunteer Department starting 5:45 a.m.

The Lower Macungie Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Lower Macungie Fire Station, 6229 Sauerkraut Lane. There will be live music, kids crafts, photo opportunities and refreshments. Characters Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Kristoff will also be there.

The next meeting for the Lower Lehigh AARP will be held noon Dec. 1 in the lower level of Macungie Memorial Hall. Bring your tickets for the Christmas party. The next meeting will be Jan. 5, 2023. For more information, contact Dot at 610-967-3284.

The Lower Macungie Township Senior Citizens will meet noon Dec. 6 for Christmas dinner at the community center. Tickets are required. Ralph Noll will sing country music.

The Ancient Oaks Womens Association will meet 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at St. Paul’s UCC in Trexlertown. For the holiday get-together there will be a visiting Belsnickel. There will also be a cutthroat Santa where each woman will bring a wrapped $10 value item no longer needed or wanted. There will also be a collection for a needy family. As always, new members are invited to join the fun and camaraderie.

The Lower Macungie Historical Society will hold a holiday open house at the log house at the Wescosville Recreation Center 4-7 p.m. Dec. 11. Luminaria will light the pathway. There will be a fire in the hearth, homemade cookies, cider and harp music.

Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold its annual Santa Run through Alburtis and Lower Macungie Dec. 17. The rain date is Dec. 18. The route will be posted on their website at www.lowermacungie.org.

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 17th Annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center through Nov. 23. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center.

The community center is collecting children’s new pajamas and books during the fall and holiday season. Items will be donated to local area children. A large receptacle is located in the lobby through Dec. 31.

Open gym is available at the community center. Residents must purchase an annual membership to use the gym.

Lower Macungie Township offers many programs for adults and children. For more information, go to http://www.lowermac.com/recreation/activities-programs/. Classes include adult yoga and dance, baking classes, Kindermusik, Safesitter and children’s sport classes.

Yard waste center hours for November and December are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. The center is located at 5536 Indian Creek Road, Macungie.

Curbside leaf collection runs through Dec. 2.

Lower Macungie Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The book drop is open 24/7. The library will be closed Nov. 24-26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The library will be closed Dec. 23-26 for the winter holiday.

There will be a Build It! Block Party for ages 2-6 years 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 21 and Dec. 7.

There will be a Sew Cute! Sewing Workshop for grades 6-12 1-3 p.m. Nov. 28.

Get In The Game – an evening of games for all ages – will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 28.

Autumn Jackson from the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles will present The Past and Future of Electric Vehicles 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 30.

December Grab & Go Activity Kits are available beginning Dec. 1.

Try-It Thursday STEM Stations for grades K-5 will be offered 2-3 p.m. Dec. 1.

Creation Station Crafts for ages 2 and up will be held 6:30-7:15 p.m. Dec. 5.

The Builders Club: Homeschool Edition for grades K-5 will be held 2-3 p.m. Dec. 6.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club book for 10:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 7 is “West With Giraffes: A Novel” by Lynda Rutledge. The book for Jan. 4, 2023 is “Rocket Boys: A Memoir” by Homer H. Hickam Jr. The book club meets virtually.

The next township column will be published Dec. 21; copy deadline is Dec. 15.

There will be a Storybook Tea Party 10:30-12:30 p.m. Dec. 10. There will be games, crafts, and activities with favorite storybook characters. Have your picture taken with Alice and the Mad Hatter.

Books and Beyond will meet 7-8:30 p.m. Dec. 12 to discuss books, music, movies, TV, travel and life. Bring ideas for future book discussions. The book for Jan. 9 is “The Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman.

Let’s Build A Snowman Storytime and Craft for ages 2-6 years will be held 10:30-11:15 a.m. Dec. 13, 14 and 15. Please register for only one session.

There will be a Pajama Storytime for ages 2-6 years 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Dec. 19.
