Batten, McGinty lead Falcons at league meet

The Colonial League Cross Country Championships were held last week at DeSales University.

Palisades’ Thomas Smigo pulled off the rare four-peat as he won the league’s boys title all four years of high school. The Pirate senior crossed the finish line in 16:30, 20 second ahead of Northwestern’s Matt Santana in second place.

In the girls race, Moravian Academy freshman Olivia Kraus captured the first league title of her career. Kraus ran the race in 18:54.56 and finished well head of second-place Avery Errico (19:36.96) of Southern Lehigh.

Salisbury freshman Emily Batten was the top Falcon finisher at the meet. She finished 19th in 21:54.71 and was the only Salisbury finisher in the girls race.

In boys action, sophomore Conor McGinty led his team with a 32nd-place finish as the Falcons took eighth place out of 10 boys teams competing.

Behind McGinty were teammates Cameron Kubinsky (53rd), Dennis Morton (60th), Gregory Tenzer (62nd), Stuart Carl (63rd), Joshua Orach (76th), Joseph Taio (78th), and Rafael Carpo (80th).

The Northwestern boys team ran to its third straight league title, with Palmerton and Southern Lehigh filling out the top three places.

In girls team standings, Notre Dame (Green Pond) earned the top spot, while Southern Lehigh and Northwestern rounded out the top three.

The runners will be back on the DeSales course this week when the District 11 Championships are contested on Wednesday.
