City celebrated Chili’s independence

Area Chileans celebrated the 212th anniversary of Chile’s independence from Spain at a Sept. 18 flag-raising on Payrow Plaza. Nearly 100 attended and perused Cesar Cordova’s collection of Chilean artifacts, enjoyed tasting homemade empanadas, danced the Chilean traditional national dance, “La Cueca,” and socialized. Dressed in the authentic clothing of a Chilean cowboy, Cordova and his wife Anna Smith addressed attendees in both Spanish and English, explaining the history of Chile’s independence, and then led others in dancing. It marked the first celebration of Chile’s independence and Cordova said it would become an annual event.
