Knauss Homestead hosts Harvest Festival Oct. 22

Come out and join members of the Knauss Homestead Preservation Society at their inaugural Harvest Festival noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 at the homestead, 152 E. Main St., Emmaus. Attendance is free. Take part in all the wonderful games, foods, arts and crafts and so much more while you immerse yourself in local Pennsylvania history. There will be food trucks featuring fresh food and drinks, artisan breweries featuring their fall finest, lots of artists, crafters and historians, fun and games for the kids and a pumpkin painting contest with awesome prizes. There will be house and barn tours throughout the day. All proceeds go directly to the restoration and preservation of the Knauss Homestead. Another event to be sure to attend is the Emmaus Public Library’s Community Heroes Day. Come out to honor our local superheroes at the library, 11 E. Main St., 6 p.m. Oct. 6. This is the opportunity to meet our awesome first-responders, firefighters, EMTs and police officers and thank them for the service they provide for our community. The event allows time to check out their equipment and tools used to save lives. The library’s parking lot will be blocked off 5 p.m. to prepare for the event. Be sure to get a good spot to cheer on the runners in the Halloween in Emmaus 5K race, many of them in costume, before the annual Halloween Parade Oct. 15. Reminder: the parade will start 7 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than usual). The race will begin 6:30 p.m. The rain date for the race is 5 p.m. Oct. 16 and for the parade 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16. A group of parade volunteers has been meeting 7 p.m. every Wednesday since Sept. 14 at the relocated borough hall location, 420 S. 10th St., to plan for the parade. The group will continue to meet Wednesdays in October until the week of the parade when they will meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 in the same location. All volunteers are welcome. The parade chair, Kathleen Mintzer, says she would like to retire as chairperson and would love to train a new person to take over. This is Kathleen’s 27th year as chairperson. The borough’s trick or treat night is 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. Be sure to turn on your porch light if you are welcoming some little ghosts or goblins. Car drivers, please be on the lookout for the trick-or-treaters walking the streets.

The Emmaus Public Library is presenting several programs relating to Halloween including: Make a Witches Hat 6 p.m. Oct. 3; Journey through the spooky side of New Jersey and New York City 6 p.m. Oct. 17 with L’Aura Hladid Hoffman, founder and director of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society and listen to spooky tales with a member of the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild 2 p.m. Oct. 29 (for elementary ages and up, not for preschoolers or the faint of heart). Books will be available for sale and signing.

Other programs include the Art @ EPL program on puppet making 11 a.m. Oct. 8. Join Elena Shackleton and Laura Elmore for a fun puppet-making workshop for ages 16 and older. The class will be held outdoors. RSVP to Eventbrite: https://workshop-puppets.eventbrite.com.

A representative from the office of U.S. Congresswoman Susan Wild, D-7th, will be at the library 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 13 to answer questions, help to resolve issues and provide other constituent services.

The Emmaus Class of 1947 is celebrating its 75th class reunion 11 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Mercantile Club in Emmaus. All 1947 graduates are invited. Contact classmate Robert Schoch at 610-967-2244 with any questions.

The Emmaus Police Department, 400 Jubilee St., will host National Drug Take Back Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29.

The borough will hold an electronics recycling event noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 10 at the E-waste dumpster beside the Public Works Department garage on Kline’s Lane. The site is open the second Monday of the month until the dumpster is full. The site is closed December through February 2023.

Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated Oct. 9-15. This year’s theme is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.”

The kickoff party for the popular Emmaus Arts Commission’s Student Film Festival will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 14. This year the kickoff party will be held at Back to the Arcade in the South Mall. The competition is open to any school in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. There is an entrance fee. Registrations opened Sept. 1. Students have eight days to write, shoot and edit a film using randomly assigned required elements. This is the 18th time the Student Fest will be held. Oct. 22 is film submission deadline.

The nominees for winning films will be announced Nov. 4 and the premiere screening of submitted films will be shown at the Emmaus Theater Nov. 11. Prizes and awards will be presented at the screening. Parental guidance is suggested for viewing the films. For information, visit www.EmmausFilm.org.

The Emmaus Historical Society and Museum, 218 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Stop by for a visit and learn more about this history-filled community.

The historical society’s next monthly membership meeting and program is scheduled 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. John’s Lutheran Church parish hall, 501 Chestnut St. The program presented by Andrew Kerstetter will be the history of the three funeral homes in Emmaus. All are welcome to attend.

The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon Oct. 4 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St., Emmaus. The program will be “Putting the Garden to Bed for the Winter,” with Linc Coffin. Coffin, a Penn State master gardener, will lead attendees through the processes on how to extend your gardening season and how to clean up the garden properly for winter. Guests are always welcome.
