Allentown receives PennDOT grant to upgrade traffic signals

Allentown

City to receive “Green Light-Go” grant

The City of Allentown recently announced it will receive $1,378,560 for upgrades to traffic signals at 12 intersections along American Parkway, Third Street and Fourth Street through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s “Green Light-Go” program.

The project includes installing a traffic adaptive system with new controller, video detection, radio communication and GPS emergency pre-emption, according to a news release from city officials.

The City of Allentown will oversee completion of the project and will need to select an engineering firm for the design traffic signal permit and obtain PennDOT permitting approval.

The plan will then be bid and once construction and installation is complete, PennDOT will do a final inspection.

The grant requires the City of Allentown to complete the work within three years.

“Green Light-Go” grants are provided as reimbursements to municipalities for updates to improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals.

Grant funding through the program may be utilized for a range of operational improvements including, but not limited to, light-emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal re-timing, developing special event plans and monitoring traffic signals, as well as upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.
