Gallery View: Lehigh Art Alliance ‘Abstraction’ at The Baum School

The Lehigh Art Alliance “Contemporary Abstraction” exhibition of more than 50 works continues through July 7, David E. Rodale and Rodale Family Galleries, The Baum School of Art, Allentown.

Domenick Naccarato, a Lehigh Valley abstract artist and member of Lehigh Art Alliance (LAA), curated the members-only exhibition, assisted by LAA President Elena Shackleton.

“The last time that we had an abstract-only show was in 2014,” Naccarato says. He discussed the matter with Shackleton. They agreed “the time was right.”

LAA members were each invited to submit two works. Some, such as Naccarato, create abstract works regularly. Others in LAA “dabble in abstract and non-representational work.”

“The exhibition presents a broad array of mediums including collage, mosaic, digital photography, sculpture, and assemblage, illustrating that painting alone is not necessarily the dominant medium of abstract art,” Naccarato says.

Naccarato’s “Two Sets of Crossed Tie Straps” (2021, mixed media on plywood, 16 in. x 48 in.) features tie straps used in construction.

“I love using sort of untraditional elements in my work,” Naccarato says.

In addition to incorporating, joint compound, wire mesh, roofing tar and other materials procured from a home improvement supply company, Naccarato experimented with creating a narrow vertical piece.

Participating artists in the exhibition at Baum include: Jonas Arguello, Richard Begbie, Karen Benco, Sue Berkenstock, Audrey “Abe” Bordonaro, Nancy Bossert, Kara Coleman, Kat Collins, Janet Dance, Laura L.
