Hickory Street Bridge grants approved

During the June 20 Macungie Borough Council meeting, it was announced a Local Share Account grant of $50,916 was approved. This is added to the Multimodal Transportation Fund grant approved before this which is $863,666. These grants are to be used for the Hickory Street bridge and the reconstruction of Church Street. Input is needed from the engineer as to how this should be accomplished. Additionally, under consideration, will be Church Street whether the road should be redone like it was done or add storm sewers.

Before the council meeting, there was an executive session regarding the police collective bargaining agreement. There were three options for a cost of living to be added to the police pension.

There is a utility box on the corner of Lehigh and Lumber Streets. PPL has approved the location against Macungie’s wishes. The sight line is a problem. Macungie wants to move it near the pedestrian bridge but this is not what PPL wants.

The Streetscape bump-outs were a topic of discussion. There is no uniformity. There is a list of approved vegetation and also who is working on them but the question was presented as to who is in charge. A suggestion to hire a professional landscaper was mentioned. A bump-out workshop was suggested with several council members, the borough engineer and the Department of Public Works. No decision was reached. This will be discussed further.

Friends of Macungie Institute held a meeting May 27 with a discussion of upcoming activities. Bingo will be held at Macungie Park as a fundraiser for the Institute Oct. 2. The Institute will hold a High Tea Dec. 3.
