It’s amazing how much you can decipher from a text message. With two young adults and a teenager, our primary form of contact these days is by text. For example, our oldest daughter almost always texts in groups of three. So “Ding, ding, ding” means it must be Lydia. Caroline takes her time to compose her text so it will be “Ding” with a much longer message. Ben has mastered the 4-7 string of “Dings” with messages in all capitals and coming in so fast it’s hard to believe he typed them.

Most recently, Matt and I were finishing dinner and preparing to head over to Ben’s choral concert when my phone started madly dinging. In quick succession, I received “MOM/I DON’T HAVE MY BLACK PANTS/THEY AREN’T IN THE BAG/I THOUGHT THEY WERE.” Before I could respond, the urgency was punctuated by the phone ringing. After briefly envisioning Ben in his suit coat and athletic shorts at the concert, we located the missing pants and ran them over to school. At this point in parenting, we were happy that it was an easily averted crisis!

The next township column will be published July 20; copy deadline is July 14.
