Tacker wins EPC gold

On the second day of the East Penn Conference Track and Field Championships, Whitehall thrower Aiden Tacker emerged as the EPC Discus Champion after his throw of 138-08 outdid the competition last Wednesday at Whitehall High School.

“It’s amazing. A lot of hard work went into it. I didn’t think I was gonna win. The other kids up on the podium, they’re big kids and they were throwing really good this year. I happened to have a good day and they didn’t have such a great day, and I came out on top,” Tacker said. “Coming into today, I was at 132-07.00, and first throw, I threw the 138. I slipped too, and I was like, oh, I don’t know how long it’s gonna go, but yeah, it was great.”

The Zephyrs also produced a bronze medalist, Ally Cook, who reached 4-09.00 in high jump.

“It was my first attempt. I was feeling good from there and then the official told us to take a five, 10 minute break, so I think that is kind of what made me not get 4-11.00, and then I didn’t get enough hop off the ground, so I kind of slowed down a little bit,” Cook said. “I have a pretty good arch, so what works for me is getting a good hit off the ground and a lot of speed.”

Cook has her eyes set on her P.R. of 5-00.00 for the district meet this week, which will have taken place on her home turf scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

“I want to get a little quicker on my approach and work on a quicker snap,” she said.

Tommy Lloyd won the fourth-place medal in javelin, breaking his personal record with a throw of 169-05.

Whitehall track and field head coach Tyler Miller had a chance to reflect on the Zephyrs’ first-time medal winners from day one of the EPC Championships, pole vaulters Ava Wells and Gregory Sommer.

“I’m very impressed. This is Ava’s first year doing it. She P.R.’ed by about a foot. I got new poles on Friday, we had two practices on them, and this was the first meet we had on them. I asked her at the end, ‘Did you have fun today?’ and she said this was the most fun she had all year,” said Miller.

“This was [Greg’s] first time in Leagues, and same thing; I’m impressed with how he did. He went up three inches. For both Greg and Ava, to come in with confidence and jump higher than they did all year is awesome. Now they have a big meet under their belt, so they have that [going into districts].”
