LHS, FHS eye playoff berth

With the regular season heading down the home stretch, many local teams are pushing to solidify postseason berths.

Liberty and Freedom are both in those predicaments, however, they’re both also in different circumstances.

The Hurricanes (9-7) need two wins in their final six contests to guarantee a District 11 spot and they hope they can get to that point this week with a three game slate against Nazareth (11-4), Dieruff (2-13) and Muhlenberg.

“Clinching a playoff spot was one of our goals at the beginning of the season,” said head coach Nigel Long. “We continue to have that goal in mind. We still have a lot of work to do to accomplish that feat.”

Liberty won two out of three last week, knocking off Easton and East Stroudsburg North. That one loss last week was a 41-39 defeat to Central Catholic. The Vikings have been the best team in the area this season, but playing tight against one of the state’s top teams was a bit of a moral victory for Long’s team.

“Central Catholic is a well coached and a very talented team,” said Long. “We gave them a fight which I am very proud of our team for. Our defense has risen to the occasion over the last week. I am excited for these last six games of the season. A lot of work left to do, however, I have been pleased with our improvements over the course of the season.”

Freedom (7-8) will be fighting till the end for a playoff berth with seven games left on the schedule.

The Pates have a daunting week against Southern Lehigh (14-3), Bethlehem Catholic (11-4) and Nazareth (11-4). Head coach Joe Stellato knows this is a crucial week for the team where they need wins to stay on pace in the postseason push.

“This is a make-or-break week,” said Stellato. “This team is a work in progress and we knew this going into the season. We’re still aware of the work that needs to be done to become a consistent team. We have to stay focused on one game at a time, but we are not good enough to look ahead.”
