Kids fall to Emmaus

Olivia Szerencsits had another impressive showing in Tuesday’s dual meet with Emmaus, but the Hornets were too much to overcome and left the Gwen Whilden Natatorium with a 135-50 win in girls’ swimming and diving and a 138-34 win on the boys’ side of the event.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Szerencsits pulled off a time of 2:01.30 to finish two seconds ahead of Emmaus’ Morgan Gould. In the 500-freestyle, Szerencsits was able to expand her margin of victory, again besting Gould, by 11 seconds when she finished with a time of 5:22.56.

“Olivia is doing a really nice job,” said coach Cullen Mentzell. “If you look at last week and this week, her splits in the 200 and 500 have been really consistent. I think she would have liked both to be a little faster today, but it was a good swim.”

Szerencsits was also a part of the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, joining with Gabriella Oswald, Ava Gower, and Brenna Caley on the 200 team and finishing third. The 400-relay team had Reia Sanchez, Andrea Davidson, Hannah Krywonis and Szerencsits and finished fourth as Emmaus teams swept the top three spots. Oswald finished second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Meanwhile, it was a good day for Northampton divers. Isabella Kish won the girls’ diving competition by 17 points over Emmaus’ Morgan Belisle and on the boys’ side, Boden Burkhart won the competition.

“Boden has three years of experience with us, and this might have been his best or second-best score in that time. For Bella, she is in her first-year diving for us, and she keeps improving dive after dive,” said Mentzell.

In the boys’ swimming portion of the event, sophomore Ryan Franke had the highest finish of the meet for Northampton when he placed second in the 100-yard backstroke.

Mentzell has been excited with the progress that he has seen from his team since the season began and looks forward to watching them continue to develop as the season winds down and heads into districts in early March.

“A lot of the girls were new to the team this year and they have really come along well. They have been dropping time every week, so that’s exciting and something to look forward to,” said Mentzell. “There are five or six swimmers where you just wonder how far they’re going to go this week and every meet you come through it and see what they’re going to do. Everybody has been working hard and our practices are great. They really think about what they’re doing and that helps make them better.”
