LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC NEWS By Isabella Bautista

Golden Hawks waved an old year goodbye as they returned to school in 2022.

For the Hawks, the last few months of 2021 were filled with several successes: the girls and boys cross country teams finished their seasons with records of 7-5 and 6-6, respectively; the theater department put on its student-directed Christmas show; and the Scholastic Scrimmage team, captained by senior Brett Fyrer, barreled on through the PBS tournament before falling to Moravian Academy in the semifinals.

Becahi’s charity and service organization, The Movement, hosted a service on campus to honor those who served on Veterans’ Day, and the group has been working hard to help in the community and raise money for the annual Lock-In that will take place Feb. 20 to support local causes. The Becahi Peer Listeners ran a book fair at Barnes & Noble in Center Valley to support the organization Cops ‘n’ Kids of the Lehigh Valley, raising over $1,400 to buy books for children in the community who cannot necessarily afford them.

The end of the year was also just the beginning of promising sports seasons for the boys basketball and wrestling teams. Led by senior captains Steven Recchio, Kevin Soto and Louis Vidal, the basketball team currently holds a record of 4-2, and it won the Jeff Dailey Tournament championship game against Notre Dame Green Pond. Seniors Edixon Gomez and Ryan Glassmacher are the two leading scorers for the team.

The wrestling team has won both of its dual meets by a landslide and placed fifth in the Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournament, with junior Tyler Kasak placing first, freshman Nathan Desmond placing second and senior Dante Frinzi placing sixth. In the Christmas City tournament, the team took first place.

Students are eager for upcoming events. They prepared to wrap up the second quarter with midterms, which took place Jan. 13 to 19. On Jan. 14, the band held its annual winter concert (postponed from Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Two students were selected to participate in the 2022 PMEA District 10 Band Festival Jan. 28 and 29, and 10 students will take part in the Northampton County Band, whose first rehearsal is Jan. 22.

The Engineering Team is preparing for its virtual competition to be held this spring. The Spring Encounter Retreat, run by a team led by seniors Alexander Dillon and Grace Hartman, begins Feb. 14 and ends Feb. 16 and will be hosted at St. Francis Retreat House in Easton.
