Liberty golf comes up short at states

Liberty’s golf team’s only loss of year came at their most inopportune time.

The Hurricanes suffered their first defeat of the season since their loss in the PIAA state championships when they dropped a 288-315 decision to LaSalle in the eastern regionals at the 1912 Club in Plymouth Meeting last Monday.

Matthew and Michael Vital played in the individual state championships Tuesday.

At regionals, Matt Vital paced the Hurricanes with a two-over par 72, finishing with an even-par 35 on the front nine. Matt Ronca had a nine-over 79 followed by Michael Vital (81), Jase Barker (83), and Jimmy Barker (93).

Tylen Leyden and Kevin LaFond each fired a one-over 71 to lead the Explorers.

“We just got beat by a better team,” said Hurricanes’ head coach Steve Bradley. “Matt Vital had a nice round, and he didn’t have a practice round.

“Jimmy Barker struggled. He needs to get away from golf for a while. He’s a great kid, and I feel badly for him.

“We did OK, but they were lights out.”

Bradley knew early on that fortune may not be on his team’s side.

“On one of the first holes, one of their player’s shot hits a tree and the ball just stays in bounds. He then chips it in. Instead of having a seven, he ends up with a three.

“On another hole, one of the players used a wedge from 110 feet out, and his shot lands in the hole. It was just one of those days.”

Liberty won the East Penn Conference championship, and they claimed their second-consecutive district title. They will return all five starters next season.
