Betty L. Mac Adam

Betty L. Mac Adam, 92 years and 9 months, a longtime resident of Whitehall, died peacefully Sept. 23, 2021, in St. Luke’s University Hospital, Bethlehem.

She and her husband, Ranald R. Mac Adam, were married 30 years at the time of his death in 2006.

Born in Northampton, she was the only child of Henry and Edith (Huber) Stefany.

Raised in Hokendauqua, she graduated from Whitehall High School in 1946, then attended East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, obtaining both her Bachelor of Science degree and Master’s degree in education.

She taught health and physical Education in Catasauqua and Whitehall high schools, and was an associate professor at Kutztown State Teachers College, retiring as chairman of the Health, Physical Education and Dance Department in 1994 after 27 years of service.

She enjoyed being a counselor at Shawnee on the Delaware Camp Hagan for 12 years.

A very active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Coplay, she served as president of church council, and was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher.

She will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by her family, friends and church congregation.

A strong and independent woman, she lived a full life well into her 90s

She was admired by all that knew her for her positive attitude that kept her young at heart until the very end.

An active, almost 75-year member of Rose Croix Chapter 235, Order of the Eastern Star, Northampton, she was initiated at her mother’s last stated meeting in 1947.

She served twice as Worthy Matron, first in 1964-65, and then again in 2008-09.

She became District Deputy Grand Matron from 1966-67, and then became Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania Inc. Order of the Eastern Star in 1983-84.

She continued her dedication as a Grand Trustee from 1996 through 2005, and committee member of the General Grand Chapter from 1997 through 2000.

Her survivors include her daughter Karen Snyder of Allentown; son Brian Snyder of Orefield; son-in-law Patrick Rissmiller; grandchildren Shanna, Christopher and Sarah; very special friend Suzanne Wary; stepson James Mac Adam and wife Diane.

She was predeceased by her daughter Louise Rissmiller and step-grandson Mark Mac Adam.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St., Coplay, PA 18037 or to the Grand Chapter of PA OES, Inc. (in memo line write Charity Committee/Cancer) and mail to the funeral home, 444 Pershing Blvd., Whitehall, PA 18052.
