LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Fire police flea market is a hit

On a simply picture-perfect day Sept. 4, the Catasauqua Fire Police held the 2021 flea market.

A flea market is defined as a market, typically outdoors, selling secondhand goods. The market appeared to have an interesting, wide array of items for sale.

This year’s event had a great turnout. Fire Police Captain Harvey Emrich reported, because of the beautiful weather, this year’s flea market might be its most successful.

“The parking lot is full, a lot of people are here, and they are buying many things,” Emrich said. “They are all carrying out things they bought.”

Hot dogs were flying off the grill nearly as quick as fire police member Charlie Hetzel could cook them. Glenn Hunsicker, another fire police member, worked at the stand’s busy counter, making sure everyone was properly fed.

The market’s wares ranged from shampoo and hygiene products, kids’ toys and clothes, tools, camping gear, gems and energy healing stones, a guitar, several microwave ovens and even ammunition for purchase.

Cyndi Drummer, of Catasauqua, had a brightly colored birdhouse-like item, complete with a chirping cardinal.

Deborah Appleton, of Allentown, viewed the event as a community yard sale. She had many items for sale she assembled from her home and asked her daughter to add any items in good shape she no longer needs.

Laura McKinley and her son Finnegan’s mother/son effort featured assorted toys and clothing.

Rose Achey and her daughter, Rebecca Rose, sold energy stones and gems. Rebecca is an intuitive energy therapist and has an energy healing and reiki practice at Holistic Awakenings, 840 Walnut St., Catasauqua.

Catasauqua resident Will Hicks had a stand that featured a number of items his children have outgrown, such as a car seat, some toys and a stroller.

Frank Schlofer operated a unique stand that sold various ammunition and had a good stream of people stopping by. Schlofer said he is happy to help the fire police raise funds for their activities.

All proceeds of the flea market benefit the Catasauqua Fire Police.
