Allen supervisors discuss sewer repairs

Allen Township Board of Supervisors discussed emergency sewer repairs and a median road study for Willowbrook Road during the June 8 meeting.

Andrea Martin, one of the township’s sewer inspection consultants, was present at the meeting to discuss emergency repairs and permanent flow meters. Recently, the sewer system near Willow Green Court had what Martin called a “heart attack” from a grease clog.

She reported the area only has a 1-inch slope between pipes instead of the required 4- to 4.5-inch slope. Without a change in elevation, the pipes would only get clogged again, she noted.

Repairs were stopped once this issue was discovered, and Martin recommended one of the pipes be lowered. She said the material underneath is compacted enough, so the pipes won’t sink. The board approved her recommendation.

Next, Martin discussed costs, advantages and disadvantages for different types of permanent sewer flow meters. The board passed a motion to approve her recommendation of two Raven-Eye meters and four FloWav meters, in addition to associated costs. The Raven-Eye meters will be located in areas of the township with a lower flow.

In other business, the board discussed installing a median on Willowbrook Road, near the FedEx Ground warehouse. A study was conducted to look at putting a median in the center of the road to stop left turns and U-turns, in addition to slowing speeds.

Supervisor Gary Behler was in favor of installing the median.

“I think if we don’t do anything, it’s a failure of this township to protect the residents,” he said.

After further discussion, the board decided to direct the road study and potential median plans to the planning commission to get another opinion on the matter.

Members of the Riverside Point community were present at the meeting to petition against the lot subdivision and duplex planned in their neighborhood. One resident stated West 27th Street will not be wide enough, even with the proposed widening, to have cars parked on both sides and allow thru traffic.

Solicitor Lincoln Treadwell Jr. said the lot in question - lot 93 - is outside the boundary of the community homeowner’s association and is not subject to any HOA conditions. Further, he said, the township does not have the authority to stop property owners from building on a lot they own, using plans that have been approved by the planning commission and board of supervisors.

The next board of supervisors meeting will be July 13. The planning commission will next meet July 19. Both meetings will take place 7 p.m. at Allen Township Fire Company, 3530 Howertown Road.
