Teams ready for D-11 baseball runs
It’s win or go home time for teams in the District 11 tournament, as action gets underway this week for Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic.
Both programs come into the tournament as favorites to make a run to the finals and if anyone knows how fragile games can be at this point, it’s the Hurricanes.
Liberty was the favorite to win the East Penn Conference crown, but came up short in the semifinals following a 3-1 loss to Pleasant Valley last week.
It was only the second time this year Liberty (17-2) has fallen short in a contest and proved just how important each day is with districts getting underway on Tuesday, when the second-seeded Hurricanes host seventh-seeded Northampton in the 6A tournament.
The K-Kids (8-10) lost both of their encounters with Liberty this year by a 21-4 margin, but don’t think that the Hurricanes will take anything for granted after their bid to win the EPC crown fell to the wayside.
“It was disappointing but we have to move on to districts,” said head coach Andy Pitsilos on their EPC tournament loss. “The kids were and remain really hungry to win. We just lost. Now the message is if we lose were done and don’t get to compete anymore.”
That message will hopefully ring true for the program, as a win over the Kids would set them up against either third-seeded Parkland or sixth-seeded Nazareth in Friday’s semifinals.
The championship game is slated for June 1.
Bethlehem Catholic (13-8) hopes they can make a run in the District 11 4A tournament, as they also come in as the second-seed and opened with Jim Thorpe on Tuesday.
Head coach Matt Corsi is confident in his group, as they ended the regular season winning seven of their last eight games.
“This is what we have worked toward since fall baseball and winter workouts,” said Corsi. “I am thrilled for these boys to be in the spot they are in.”
A win on Tuesday would pit them against either third-seeded Saucon Valley or sixth-seeded North Schuylkill in the semifinals.
“We are playing well right now,” Corsi said. “The key all season is not to get over confident or under confident. We have tried to stay even keel. From here on out we will play very good teams.”
