Spanitz, Jobes win gold at district meet
Bethlehem Catholic’s Cailey Spanitz and Liberty’s Emily Jobes were crowned district champions while six other Hurricane girls picked up medals at the District XI Class 3A Track and Field Championships last Wednesday at Blue Mountain High School in Schuylkill Haven.
“I’m obviously very excited because I won, but I would’ve loved to hit at least 12-06 or even 13-00, but I cannot complain,” said Spanitz, who pole vaulted to a gold medal at 12-00.00. “I’m very excited about it. It was a good jump. I then went from pole vault to triple jump and then back, which might’ve affected my 12-06 a little bit. Definitely I’ll be working on my plant in practice, the last part of the jump. I’ve been going behind my head a little bit, and I need to get it in front of my body more.”
Jobes won the 3200 meter run comfortably, with a time of 11:28.98, almost 24 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Kelsey Gaston of Lehighton.
Liberty’s Brylee Tereska won a silver medal in javelin with a throw of 130-07. She also set a personal record and broke Liberty’s school record, previously held by Eleni Prodes at 127-07.
“I kind of had a little bit of a feeling [that I medaled], but you always just have to wait until the end because you can literally expect anything,” said a beaming Tereska. “My second throw was my best throw, so that felt pretty good. My first throw wasn’t there quite yet, but I knew I still had some stuff left in me. Basically, I’m just looking forward to the competition at states because I know there’s really good girls out there so I’m looking to maybe P.R., have fun.”
Also from Liberty, Catey Kelly took home a bronze medal and set a personal record in the triple jump (35-09.00) and tied for a bronze with teammate Essynce Botz in the long jump (16-08.00). Annika Flanigan won a bronze medal for the pole vault (10-06.00).
Kelly, Botz, Jessica Farrell, and Jesikah Samuel were bronze medalists in a close finish in the 4x1 relay in 50.16, their best time of the season.
Spanitz, Jobes, and Tereska will advance to compete in the PIAA State Track and Field Championships on May 29 at Shippensburg University.
