Girls track: Two win gold

On Brylee Tereska’s second attempt at the javelin throw, the Liberty junior could feel it, see it, and ultimately won it at the East Penn Conference Track and Field Championships last Monday at East Stroudsburg South High School.

“It flew nice too,” said Tereska, now an EPC gold medalist with a throw of 127-04. “I felt it technique-wise, and I saw it land between the 140 and 120 marker. But other girls were in the low 120’s, so I wasn’t sure because there was still one more round of throws.”

The Hurricane junior was just three inches shy of Liberty’s school record.

“It’s a bummer, but I’m glad I P.R.‘ed (set a personal record). It felt awesome because freshman year I was third, so now stepping up to first place is a great feeling,” she said.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Cailey Spanitz was also an EPC gold medalist. The Becahi senior pole vaulted to 12-00.00.

“I was feeling pretty good, but there was a crosswind that was throwing everybody off,” said Spanitz, whose personal record is 12-08.00. “I’m definitely excited for districts, and I have some really good competition.”

Two of those competitors are also from the EPC, Parkland’s Coral Shivok and Liberty’s Annika Flanigan who won the bronze last week.

“Coral and I are neck-and-neck, and we push each other,” said Spanitz. “People will say, ‘You got 12-8. You’re good.’ But no. It only takes one jump. I’m definitely motivated to keep training and going hard. We’ll see how it goes.”

Spanitz then went on to win a silver medal in the triple jump (35-00.00).

“I was ecstatic,” she said. “I was a little late from pole vault, so I didn’t get any warm-up jumps. But Freedom (High School) has been really kind and let us use [their jumping pit] for practice every day for the past week.”

Liberty senior Catey Kelly took bronze in the triple jump and silver in the 4x1 relay along with Alicia Rodriguez, Jesikah Samuel, and Essynce Botz.

Also from Liberty, Emily Jobes was the 1600 meter run gold medalist (5:13.42) and the 3200 meter run gold medalist (11:20.28).

Fellow Hurricane Jessica Farrell won silver in the 400 meter dash (1:00.09) and bronze in the 200 meter dash (26.39).
