Girls lax suffers first loss

It took nearly an entire regular season for the Emmaus girls lacrosse team to meet it’s match. The Hornets started the season 13-0 and were still unbeaten when they met up with Easton last week. The Red Rovers, which were also undefeated heading into the game, beat Emmaus 13-10 last Thursday evening at Emmaus High School in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference showdown.

The Rovers (13-0 overall, 8-0 EPC) scored the game’s first four goals on their way to handing the Green Hornets (15-1, 7-1) their first loss on the year.

“Easton played with very few mistakes, while we made many untimely mistakes,” said Emmaus head coach Roxann Betz. “We did not play our best game but, we did play with heart and effort throughout the game.”

Easton was ahead 9-3 at halftime and stayed in control for the remainder of the game. Emily Hollinger, Julia Cote, Marybeth Smith and Jordyn Poll tallied two goals each for Emmaus, while both Ally Shaffer and Rebekah Brosky added one apiece.

Even after the first setback of the season, Betz feels confident ain her team’s abilities.

“Our team has played extremely well from the very beginning,” Betz said. “We have great leadership and everyone has been playing together as a team. The upperclassman have really helped the younger players get comfortable at the varsity level and everyone continues to work hard day in and day out.”

The Green Hornets did not let one loss spiral into two as they bounced back two days later to defeat Wyoming Seminary 18-4 in a nonconference game. Smith had a game-high five goals.

“Our girls lost to Easton with grace,” said Betz. “We realized we did not play our best lacrosse against Easton. We rebounded against Wyoming Seminary and started to rebuild our focus. We are working on focusing on the things we do well and building confidence as we look ahead to the final week of the season.”

Already this week, the Hornets defeated Northwestern Lehigh 14-0 as they continue to add on to another win streak. The Green Hornets host Parkland Wednesday evening before the EPC and District 11 playoffs begin next week.

“We look to get back to the confidence level we had against Governor Mifflin,” Betz said. “We will take each game this week and use it to continue to build our team chemistry and we look forward to the season finale against rival Parkland.”
