East Allen Township Fire Department to hold raffle May 16

At the Feb. 10 East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting, it was announced the fire department will be holding a raffle noon-4 p.m. May 16. It is expected to be an in-person event.

The drawing is planned for 4:30 p.m. May 16. Prizes will be awarded. If not present, prizes can be picked up May 17 at the fire house, 5354 Nor Bath Blvd.

There was excitement about the raffle. It is seen as a harbinger of a return to some normalcy in the township, hopefully, as the pandemic recedes.

In other business, supervisors learned the open space and farmland preservation committee is garnering more interest. The committee now has public relations materials and is developing a T-shirt to promote the effort to preserve farms and open space in the township.

Residents interested in joining the committee are urged to call the township office.

The River Central Regional Comprehensive Plan is a consortium of five municipalities - Catasauqua, North Catasauqua and Northampton boroughs and East Allen and Hanover, Lehigh County, townships. River Central is being guided by Lehigh Valley Planning Commission. A major component of the plan is to share resources through mutual aid agreements, possibly including fire and police coverage and other development initiatives.

It was reported the River Central group is planning a website. Supervisors urged residents to familiarize themselves with River Central activities as the effort will involve quality of life, shared resources and shared future municipal actions.

The anticipated township farmers market plan is growing fast. Local farmers are being contacted to glean interest in a Wednesday market, which is expected to possibly run May through September.

“I just want it to stop snowing,” said Roger Unangst in the public works report.

He explained his concern that a 3-inch snowfall uses more salt than a 7-inch snowfall. This increases public works costs.

The zoning report indicated there is an unexpected rise in interest in commercial activities as evidenced by the numbers of small businesses planning to open this year in the township.

First Regional Compost Authority reported 2020 was its busiest year. They are gearing up for another active year.

The next meeting of the board of supervisors is 7 p.m. Feb. 25. It will be held via Zoom. Visit eatwp.org or call the township office at 610-262-7961 for the call-in and access codes to enter the meeting.
