No tax increase in Moore’s 2021 budget

“We got lucky,” noted Moore Township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner Dec. 22, 2020, as he discussed last year’s budget with the board of supervisors.

Apprehension about budget dollars permeated the municipal building in the spring of 2020, causing Steiner some sleepless nights. The concern was how much of a 2020 budget shortfall the township would experience because of the pandemic shutdowns and employee furloughs.

Anticipated earned income tax reductions paid by workers and decreased real estate tax receipts based on real estate sales had Steiner worried. He ciphered what the impact would be on that budget to keep supervisors appraised of the fluid, fiscal situation.

Although Steiner claimed luck, the reality was prudent adjustments by himself and the board of supervisors, coupled with a less-than-anticipated loss of revenue, kept the township financially on track.

In fact, the 2021 township budget avoided a tax hike while many other municipalities increased their tax millage for 2021. The Moore Township budgeted revenues for 2021 are about $4,000,066. A copy of the budget is available online at mooretownship.org.

The township land and environmental protection board canceled its December 2020 meeting. It is currently advising East Allen Township, which is planning to develop a system to preserve more farmland in East Allen.

The board was expected to hold its reorganization meeting Jan. 4.
