Field hockey falls to Emmaus in playoffs

Whitehall had the unenviable task of facing defending District 11 champion Emmaus three times this season and wasn’t able to pick up a win. The Lady Hornets, who have actually won 31-straight district titles, downed Whitehall 13-0, eliminating the Lady Zephyrs from districts and ending their season.

Emmaus came into the game having outscored their opponents 98-2 this season, winning all 10 of their regular season games. The Hornets had six different players score goals in the win with three of them scoring multiple goals.

Whitehall was able to put up an early fight against Emmaus but the Hornets were able to pick up two first quarter goals. By halftime, Emmaus had expanded its lead to 5-0. All of the goals were scored by different players.

Lexi Kociban led Emmaus with four goals in the game with teammates Annika and Rachel Herbine both scoring three goals. Rachel Herbine also had five assists in the game, assisting Kociban on four goals and then the two switched roles as Herbine picked up one of her three goals after an assist from Kociban.

This is the second straight season that the Hornets and Zephyrs (5-7) met in the quarterfinals of the District 11 playoffs and Emmaus won that meeting 12-0. The Hornets will play Parkland (8-2) in the semifinals after Emmaus downed the Lady Trojans twice during the regular season.

After losing their first four games of the season, Whitehall turned its season around with three straight wins before running into Emmaus for two straight games. The Zephyrs went right back to their win streak, beating Allen and Lehighton to finish out the regular season.
