Three PHS golfers make districts after 4-6 season

The Parkland High School golf team had its 2020 season come to a close last week. The Trojans finished with a 4-6 overall record, but head coach Ryan Kilpatrick is looking past the win-loss record and is satisfied that his team was able to hit the links and compete, and that is what they did in every match.

“It was great to let the kids compete,” said Kilpatrick. “Everyone was happy to be out and playing golf with their friends. No more challenges than usual, everything went very smoothly.”

Now with the regular season behind them, the Trojans will look toward the postseason this week. Parkland has three student-athletes that will competed in Monday’s district qualifier Monday. They include James Kelly, Sydni Sundstrom and Danielle Crenshaw. The trio had a strong season and Kilpatrick has high expectations for them this postseason.

“I think all three of our players can make it through the qualifier,” Kilpatrick said. “I also have confidence that Jimmy can make it through districts if he peaks at the proper time.”

With the Coronavirus clouding over the fall seasons of high school sports, most coaches and student-athletes of various programs were very grateful that the PIAA decided to go ahead and play their fall season. With location playing a factor into scheduling this season, the Trojans competed against five opponents, two games apiece.

“The regular season was great,” said Kilpatrick. “It was fun playing teams twice (once at home and once away). We had two good battles with Easton. That schedule doesn’t work out so well against teams we know we have a tough time beating though, hence our six losses. Overall though, it was a great season and I’m proud of the team.”

Along with Parkland’s top individual performer in Kelly, Kilpatrick highlighted a few other student-athletes not competing in districts that had good seasons.

“James Kelly has been our top player, number one all year,” Kilpatrick said. “We also received some good scores out of seniors Alex Doe and Nick Atlas as well.”
