Cross country teams knock off Dieruff

The Whitehall cross country team swept Dieruff last week in a meet.

For the Zephs, Mikayla Warren was the overall winner with a time of 23:30.

“Mikayla Warren is getting faster with each race,” said head coach Mike Lelko. “At the home meet vs Dieruff she PR’d lowering her time on the hilly Whitehall Parkway course from 24:08 to 23:30.”

A pleasant surprise for Lelko is senior Lindsay Solderitch who finished 2nd behind Warren in 26:13 in the race.

“Lindsay appears to be more serious with cross country this season and has been running well,” Lelko said. “Senior Brianna Uhnak, juniors Mackenzie Laub and Allison Pavone, sophomore Christen Makhoul and freshman Kyla Pascoe are all running strong and round out our point scorers in the meets.”

In the home meet, Laub was third in 26:23, Pavone was fourth in 29:37 and Makhoul was fifth in 30:09.

For the boys, Christian Foehrkolb took first in 20:24. Sean Connolly was second in 20:43 and Gavin Hagley took third in 20:44.

“Sophomore Christian Foehrkolb has been the #1 runner the last two meets,” Lelko noted. “Against Dieruff, he got his first high school win in a time of 20:24 Junior Sean Connolly has been in the top three for Whitehall throughout the season and got his first scholastic win against William Allen in 20:25.”

Just like the girls team, Lelko has a pleasant surprise in senior Jacob Busch who has been one of Whitehall’s top-seven boys. Lelko believes this boys team could see a successful payoff this season due to working hard in practice and pushing their teammates in competition.

Rounding out the boys point scorers are seniors Jeffrey Warren and Jakob Schlosser, junior Gavin Hagley and sophomores Austin Hedrick and Vincent Eggleston.

“Because of the pandemic, assistant coach Mike Fabian and myself made a move relocating our offseason practices back in June from the Hokey Park up to the isolated Whitehall Parkway home course,” Lelko said. “Training on the Parkway hills have definitely made the girls and boys stronger and faster. A majority of our runners have lowered their times and set PR’s. e also have some “home court advantage” with three of our five EPC meets at the Parkway.
