Hawks top Liberty in tennis action

Bethlehem Catholic’s number three doubles pair of Patty Superka and Cecile Szollas are undefeated for a season and a half, and staying that way will be a really big deal for the Hawks.

“Being undefeated is a big thing for us,” said Szollas, a senior.

This season, the pair hadn’t lost a set until Sept. 16 at Nazareth.

“We lost the first set, and then we were like, OK, it’s game time,” said Superka. “We were undefeated last year and we’re undefeated now, and we still want to be undefeated and know we can do it.”

Last Thursday, Superka and Szollas defeated Liberty’s Elise Kney and Hermani Patel, 6-3, 6-4, in the Hawks 5-1 victory over the Hurricanes at Becahi.

“The score might not reflect it, but they did have something to lose in the second set, so that’s what they were playing for,” Szollas said. “With that, we usually play more conservatively in the beginning because we want to establish initial strategy with them, and that usually results in them having a little more aggression.

“Usually when you hit more toward down-the-line, they’re good at getting to the ball, but afterward that opens up the middle to hit a middle shot.”

Crosscourt shots, down-the-line shots, and hitting in the middle were well-executed by the Hawks throughout the match.

“We saw that if we rallied with them and hit the ball hard, we could let the point play,” said Superka.

In other doubles matches, Becahi’s Alexa Schoenfield and Maddie Lennert defeated Sruti Tekumalla and Sofia Horstmann at two doubles, 7-5, 6-2, and Becahi’s Grace Hartman and Isabella Bautista defeated Ashlan Snyder and Sophia Csatari at four doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

Liberty’s only won match came at number one singles where Veronica Lynn defeated Cara Magliochetti, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

“It took a moment to settle in. I kind of was losing it mentally toward the end. I was so tired,” said Lynn.

“[Assistant coach] Dawn was telling me to calm down and hit to her backhand. When she’s in the middle of the court, she can just take control. It feels good beating her because it was such a tough match.”

At number two singles, Becahi’s Shannon Stewart defeated Angelique Ronca, 6-0, 6-1, and at number three singles, Becahi’s Taylor Adams defeated Margeaux Donchez, 6-4, 6-1.

Bethlehem Catholic’s matches against Freedom this week are being postponed to later dates while Liberty is scheduled to travel to Easton on Sept. 23.
