Trick or treat will go on in Northampton

During its Sept. 17 meeting, Northampton Borough Council approved the annual trick-or-treat night, which will take place 6-8 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31.

Unlike some communities in the area that have canceled trick or treat, borough council unanimously voted to continue the event.

There was no commentary from council members regarding this vote. There was, however, mention following the meeting by some individuals that many children will be wearing masks as part of their costumes.

Residents wanting to give out candy and other treats should have their porch lights on to greet the children and should comply with the state’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing face coverings. Borough police will also be out patrolling the streets across the four wards to ensure the safety of the children.

In other business, council gave approval to Catholic War Veterans Post 454 to place large concrete memorials at the base of the flagpole at Canal Street Park. The concrete memorials have the seals of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. They had been placed for years at the former Mary Immaculate Seminary in Lehigh Township.

CWV Post 454 holds an annual flag-burning ceremony, in observance of Veterans Day and Flag Day, at the Canal Street Park location.

During the meeting, council was also told the borough is completing bid specifications for a new garbage hauling contract. The present contract expires at the end of 2020. The bids from contractors will be opened in October, after which the proposals will be examined and a new multiyear pact will be awarded.
