Girls tennis still happy to be on the courts

Grateful to be able to play tennis this fall, the Konkrete Kids are balancing the precautionary measures required of the season with the competitive nature of the sport.

“We have a great bunch of Kids, and watching them get better is one of my main pleasures. Learning about the ups and downs of competition is also one of my goals,” said Northampton tennis coach Kim Davis. “With all the off-court things happening, virus, new school issues, family, being around these kids and having Lyn Tepes as an assistant has afforded a great opportunity here at Northampton.”

Playing at number one singles will be junior Abby Beil. Caitlin Stoudt will play two singles, and Emma Whitman is at three singles.

“Abby Beil and Emma Whitman played almost entirely at doubles last year. Caitlin Stout played limited singles,” Davis said. “They are doing well. I do not think the people outside of the game understand the level of competition these girls face each week.”

Playing at two doubles is the new pairing of Rachel Zeitner and Caroline Gray.

“Caroline and Rachel both played with different partners last year. They don’t overthink, they just play. Olivia and Bella at three will give them a push,” said Davis.

Olivia Tepes and Bella Aguanno are at three doubles, and playing at four doubles are Crissa Andrew and Devin Rogozinski.

Morgan Heffelfinger, the only senior, is the team’s captain.

“Morgan has been on the roster for four years and usually plays alternate number one doubles,” Davis said. “She is our captain because she is a leader. She handles any off and on court issue we need. She understands she is not the best player on the court, but asks to help in any way she can.”

With 22 players on Northampton’s roster, Coach Davis looks forward to as many exhibition matches throughout the season as possible.

“Freedom with eight courts and lots of players was a great opportunity,” he said. “Those of us with only four courts have limited chances.”
