Author meet and greet Sept. 12 at Sun Inn

Bethlehem resident Scott Morro has written his sixth young adult novel, “The Washington Pursuit,” which was released on Aug. 25.

In constructing the novel, Morro, who is a sixth-grade English teacher at DeFranco Elementary School in Bangor, took a historical fact and spun it into a tale set in Bethlehem.

“During the American Revolution, there was treasure buried in Chadd’s Ford, Pa., where people’s homes were looted by the British,” Morro said.

The treasure in the book is buried at The Sun Inn in downtown Bethlehem, which is where the story concludes. However, Morro cautions there is no real buried treasure at The Sun Inn.

“I wouldn’t want people tearing up floor boards,” Morro laughed.

The story’s main characters are middle school friends Ernie Goodman and Bobby Donatelli, who set out to find the hidden treasure by embarking on a modern-day scavenger hunt.

In promoting his book, Morro has partnered with Seth Cornish, past president of the Sun Inn Preservation Association, for an event scheduled for Sept. 12, with a rain date of Sept. 26.

“We’ll gather at The Sun Inn courtyard for a meet-and-greet, a 45-minute tour of significant historical sights downtown, and a book signing,” said Morro, who continues to be fascinated by the history of the city of Bethlehem.

In fact, President George Washington played a role in downtown Bethlehem when he stayed at The Sun Inn.

The story also addresses issues including alcoholism, suicide and mental illness, as well as friendship and redemption.

“It’s done in a way that is not depressing and not over-the-top, but the issues are ones that families are dealing with,” Morro said.

The book’s publisher, Creators Publishing of Hermosa Beach, Calif., suggested Morro have some of his students at DeFranco Elementary School read advance copies of the book, so that their quotes could be placed on the back cover.

Although Morro is not one to flaunt his talent for writing, his students eventually get wind of the fact that their teacher is a published author.

“They think it’s cool,” said Morro.

Some former students have reached out to Morro with appreciation for making them better writers and making them want to read.

“It’s an overwhelming thing to hear someone say that to you,” he said.

Morro is currently working on his seventh young adult novel, “The Albrecht Society” which is the sequel to “The Washington Pursuit.”

“The Washington Pursuit” can be purchased at Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, and on Amazon.
