UPPER MILFORD TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS Flooding damage discussed

Upper Milford Township Supervisors met in an online Zoom meeting Aug. 6.

Supervisors discussed the flooding damage caused by Tropical Storm Isaias. “We had a lot of rain,” Supervisor Dan Mohr said. “It’s amazing it wasn’t worse than it was!”

“I’m happy we made it through the storm with no deaths or injuries,” Supervisor Robert Sentner said.

Township Manager Bud Carter said the township rain gauge registered a rainfall of 6.7 inches for the recent storm. He offered a thank you to the public works department personnel who worked hard to keep the roads clear.

“Great job,” Supervisor Joyce Moore said.

The supervisors discussed a proposed invitation from the East Penn Chapter of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce to join at a fee of $400 per year. After some consideration the supervisors decided to put off a decision until next fiscal year’s budget is considered before they commit to the membership expense.

One specific concern was voiced by Sentner. “Will this encourage other chambers of commerce to come after us?”

A mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to influence “public and government policy at all levels: federal, state and local,” according to its website.

The very short meeting quickly addressed the agenda items to include authorizing the treasurer to pay the bills for a total of $28,324.

Supervisors approved a proclamation thanking Eagle Scout and recent Emmaus High School graduate Justin Hilbert for his project work at Jasper Park. Hilbert’s Eagle project was to build a birdhouse, an owl box and a bat house. He also built a trail and installed information signs.

He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 71 which is sponsored by Solomon’s Church of Christ in Macungie. His scoutmaster is Christopher Kershner who is also an Eagle Scout.

Justin’s mother, Wendy Hilbert, when interviewed, said, “When Justin was in child care they took the children to Jasper Park for a couple of hours during the summer. He has always enjoyed the trips and he knew he wanted to do something at Jasper Park to give back to the community. This was his inspiration for his Eagle Scout project.”

Justin is the son of Charles Hilbert III and Wendy Hilbert.
