LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Camp Jefferson: Lansdale coal mine field trip is a hit

Time is sure flying by at Camp Jefferson, as week six has come to an end. We had some fantastic weather during the week and a great field trip.

On Monday, exciting games like Fastest in the West and dodgeball were enjoyed by everyone. Some campers were enjoying the day by staying cool and making bracelets with colorful string, while other campers chose to play a basketball game against the counselors, which was definitely a sight to see. All of the campers were able to enjoy a great day at the pool and snack stand with their friends.

On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to visit the 19th Century Number 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansdale for our field trip. The trip started with a ride 1,600 feet into the side of a mountain. The coal mine opened in 1855 and is the oldest operating coal mine on the planet. Campers learned what the conditions were like for coal miners throughout the years until it closed in 1972. All the campers loved walking through the chilly caves and riding the mine cart through the almost endless tunnels.

On Wednesday, there were some intense and friendly games of Capture the Flag and Silent Ball. The weather really seemed to tire everyone out until it was time for the pool. The campers loved to swim and play with the counselors and their friends.

When Thursday rolled around, everyone was a little tired, but that did not stop us from playing more games. The campers were thrilled while playing Handball, Four Square and basketball. The campers then had the option to participate in the craft for the week, which was rock painting. It was so awesome to see how differently each camper painted his or her rocks.

Then on Friday, to end the week, everyone enjoyed countless games of Four Square, Manhunt and Partner Tag. Just like every other day of the week, the campers were very excited to cool off at the pool at the end of the day.

Congratulations to our Campers of the Week, Malia P. and Eddie L.!

We are looking forward to a terrific week seven.
