Council fills vacant seats

Vacancies on the zoning board of adjustment and civil service commission in Northampton Borough were filled at the May 2 borough council meeting.

Kenneth Richard was appointed to the zoning board for a term ending Dec. 31, 2019, and to the civil service commission for a term ending Dec. 31, 2021. These vacancies were a result of the recent death of Richard Ackerman.

There was no comment made by council members regarding the appointments. Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. made the motion for Richard’s appointment.

Two other applicants were vying for the post on the zoning board - Joan Marinkovits, a retired magisterial district judge, and Jerome Serensits.

There remains a vacancy on the planning commission due to the resignation of Marinkovits, whose term ends Dec. 31, 2020.

Borough lawmakers were notified that Sheila Horwith, of Horwith Trucking, was named the 2019 recipient of the Distinguished Citizens Award by the Cement Belt Friends of Scouting. The borough will place a half-page ad in the program congratulating Horwith. Mayor Thomas Reenock was the 2018 award recipient.

Work by borough crews began this week to prepare the municipal pool on Laubach Avenue for its June 8 opening.

Previously, the pool opened over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Due to uncertain weather and staffing concerns, the pool will instead open the following week.
